DTG machine

What is a DTG machine?

Just what exactly is a DTG machine, anyway? A DTG machine is a printer that prints designs directly onto a garment. DTG stands for “Direct to Garment”. The printer is specially designed to move a garment through it instead of paper and has specially formulated inks that allow it to print directly onto a shirt, for example, and not wash off again in the laundry. There are several different designs of DTG printers on the market. Some are meant to print huge patterns of gigantic swatches of fabric. Others are specifically designed for sweat jackets and t-shirts. They range in size from something that would fit in an average home office and print onto a t-shirt all the way to something that would need a small house to be housed in and can print twelve shirts at once. Some types of machines cannot print dark inks and some can.

DTG machines used to be very slow and produce poor quality images. Today, the technology has improved by leaps and bounds and DTG machines are a growing market, as people take on the spirit of the entrepreneur and begin their own graphic design garment businesses. You’ve probably seen one before without realising it, as they are often a feature in kiosk businesses around the country. Any novelty t-shirts you have were probably printed with a DTG machine.
